Superconducting wire and CAD tool vendors combine forces to simplify electrical machine design Print E-mail

--- The superconducting wire producer Sumitomo Electric, and the electromagnetic simulation expert Cobham Technical Services, have joined forces to offer an advanced solution for the design of electrical machines and power equipment.

Cobham's QUENCH electromagnetic software tool for modelling the quenching process in superconducting materials now comes with a library containing comprehensive manufacturer-supplied material characterisation data for Sumitomo's DI-BSSCO bismuth-based superconducting wire. The combination will greatly simplify the design and prototyping stages of applying high temperature superconductors (HTS). Among the application sectors currently exploring HTS-based solutions are electricity transmission and distribution infrastructure, hydroelectric and wind turbine generators, electric motor propulsion systems for ships, and high performance magnets.

3D design software speeds response time for RF connector specialist Print E-mail

A sizeable proportion of the coaxial RF connector business is for custom parts, and the strong competition in this sector means that success relies heavily on a connector vendor's responsiveness to customer requests. One of the most successful and longest-established manufacturers in this market is San-tron. Around 70% of its business is producing custom parts, and a key element in securing these orders is the ability to produce engineering samples rapidly. San-tron will typically design a new connector within just three working days, thanks in part to an automated design process using the Concerto high-frequency electromagnetic design software, from Cobham Technical Services.

3D support optimises power of innovative motor and generator electromagnetic design tool Print E-mail

Cobham Technical Services is launching a 3D version of its rapid electromagnetic design tool for rotating electrical machines - the Advanced Machines Environment. The new software combines the extreme accuracy of finite-element analysis (FEA) simulation with a design entry system that creates full 3D models of electric motors or generators within minutes. The software is an application-specific toolbox of the well-known Opera electromagnetic simulator, and allows users to achieve radical new levels of design productivity and performance.

Groundbreaking aircraft lightning strike simulation project Print E-mail

Oxford, UK, November 6, 2009 --- Lightning strike tests of a helicopter at Eurocopter's Donauwörth facility have verified the accuracy of finite element analysis techniques for characterising the electromagnetic behaviour of complete and custom-cabled modern aircraft structures constructed using advanced composite materials.
